A Final Toast to Summer
As the summer days become shorter and shorter, I just wanted to share with you guys two artists that played a central role in many of my summer playlists. The soundtrack to outdoor BBQs, summer dresses, badmington in the park, beach adventures, and the general bustle of summer in the city. Both artist hail from the land of São Paulo, Brazil. Does this mean São Paulo is the world’s main exporter of summer goodness?

London, London - Cibelle featuring Devandra Banhart (mp3)

“London, London” was originally written by the great Cataeno Veloso when the Brazilian Government exiled Caetano and Gilberto Gil because their music become to powerful. The original is a song of yearning and peaceful resignment of exile in a foreign land; However, through Cibelle and Devandra Banhart’s inerpretation, the song now exudes the charming wonderment of being lost in beautiful city. Updated with subtle blips and churdles of electronica behind the samba guitar, this song can be found on her latest album The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves.

Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above - Cansei de ser Sexy (mp3)

The other gang from São Paulo are Cansei de ser Sexy which literally means Tired of being Sexy in their native tongue. The band counts five Brazilian Girls and one sleazy guy with a porn mustache. Oh and their singer is named LoveFoxxx. Not only does this song win best title ‘06 but it’s also a great fun playful groove reminscent of Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love. There also a part in the song where they do an amusing job at pretending they’re DFA1979.
Both bands also have very playful and charming videos that are worth checking out before summer is officially over.
