Differnet - Subtle Glitch Pop

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Subtlety and refine delicateness are the specialties of this Electronica Outfit from Sweden. Differnet’s music has the natural flow of liquid, or of ice water to be more poignant. Blips, static, all kinds of new inorganic sounds are constantly shifting–phasing in and out like a fluctuating radio channel–through the run of the song. Swimming in this aural vortex is a very beautiful angelic voice that harmonizes with the other motions of the song through its own nuances and modulations applied by Differnet’s pristine production.

Conflictionary (Barricade Builders of the World Unite and Take Over) - Differnet (mp3)

Conflictionary is as perfect as it is perplexing. The lyrics speak of violent blood-red protest while the song itself sounds as calm and natural as dew drops dripping gracefully off green leaves. On several levels, this song can fit easily into the flow of Radiohead’s OK Computer. Aesthetic similiarities are obvious. On conceptual terms, Conflictionary follows the same cathartic paths of an Ok Computer song. A protaganist proclaims certain virtues and philosophies until the half way point of the song when a sudden revelation/relapse/brainwashing changes the individual’s mind. In Conflictionary’s case, the metamophosis starts with the gears of protest slowly stuttering up to momentum and numbers to vehement demands of bloodshed and finally to a collapse into exhausted realization that this battle is perpetual. It’s an amazing ride to say the least.

Caligula - Differnet (mp3)

I never heard anything that sounds like Caligula. Atleast not outside my dreams. Imagine you’re clinging onto a rock in the middle of a stream that ebs and flows around you carrying the flotsam and jetsam of the day’s memories by you. Sights and sounds phase in and out. Sometimes turbulent, sometimes gentle. A disembodied voice. A solar flare bursting into rain fall. And you wake.

Sebastian does Fight Club

Dolami - Sebastian (mp3)

Those French know how to pack a punch when it comes to Electro. Sebastian, like their Ed Banger label mates Justice, manipulate their synths and drum machines into a focus stylish frenzy. The beginning arpeggio can easily soundtrack the intro to Fight Club. It basically sounds like synapses firing during the minds preparation and contemplation before a big fight. When the bass line comes you know shit’s gonna go down. I’m sure if Fight Club was made today, Mr. Fincher would have called Ed Bangers to get atleast some licensing fees.

Uffie Electro Hustling in Your Face

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

Ever since Peaches advised us to Fuck the Pain Away, the electro genre has delved further and further into the seedier side of sex and unapologetic in-your face attitude. Hot Chick and Hustler are two electro slaps in the face that make no compromise in their brashness.

Hustler - Simian Mobile Disco (mp3)
Hustler - Simian Mobile Disco (Ridiculous Video)

Simian Mobile Disco’s Hustler is the soundtrack to the edgier party scene found in Miami and NYC. The opening lines of “I’m a hustler baby/That’s what my daddies made me” easily clue you in what’s next in store. What makes Hustler a larger than life Sexual Beast may have something to do with (probably) the hottest video made this year by Saam Farahmand. The video definitely starts out innocently enough with hipster chicks whispering into each others ears but what happens next filtered through the VHS Amatuer Treatment that has been Saam’s style can help land this newcomer director in one of those Directors Cut DVDS that made Gondry and Cunningham a household name.

Hot Chick - Uffie (mp3)

Uffie comes back for more with a beat by Mr. Oizo that exudes the French Electro Scene aka Ed Bangers Record with their stylish synth kick and stutters. The best part of this Ed Banger blaster is the 1:42 mark where the production just manipulates Uffies voice in to pure spastic pleasure.
